The Shire – no it’s not a place where Hobbits Live!

Back again: we are still looking at the Shire – Sutherland Library and its services.

Local Studies:  in terms of Library 2.0 – not really happening.

BUT: they have many items such as fact sheets [down loan, does that count, and print off] on the Shire and its history – written for school students, photo’s which are accessible ‘on-line’.  There are various local newspapers now catalogued and stored on-line which you can also access. This includes some now no-longer in print [Engadine News].

There is a catalogue on line for CD Rom’s for Electoral Rolls which would help if doing family tree – and there is other information in the library on this as well.

Children’s: Yes in Library 2.0 they score points here for:-

Free music downloads – this is predominantly a teen activity.  There are digital magazines – so techno savvy [usually 15 – 25 year olds] will access this feature.  BUT most of the Sutherland Library children’s services are face to face/in house offerings.  That said: they do have branches throughout the Shire at: Sutherland, Cronulla, Caringbah, Miranda, Sylvania, Menai, Engadine, and Bundeena to cater for its clientele. 

Teenage/Youth: Library 2.0 is not as good as children.

Try the library catalogue as you can search – does this count as Library 2.0?

There is eBooks but I’m not sure how you would borrow these.  You can search for stuff and see what is available, then reserve…. But you still have to attend and collect/sort out issues with the branch face to face.

There is Encyclopaedia Britannica on-line but you must be in the library to use this facility.

Sharp Online Reference Library - A selection two reference encyclopedias covering global history and culture - Conflicts since WWII and World Monarchies & Dynasties.

* So is the library services able to help?  I think so.  They have many computers to access the internet, they have uploaded much History materials for use 'on-line' and staff are more than happy to help.

If in doubt, avoid the place [especially the main Sutherland Library itself] when the HSC is on as their are youth 'studying' there most days.  Addedd 21 11 2013 :-)

The Shire – no it’s not a place where Hobbits Live!

We have a pretty standard mix of ethno-religious groups but predominantly Anglo-Celtic in composition.  There are major parklands: The Royal, Botany Bay and Heathcote National Parks bounding this Local Government Area to its south, east and south-east, with beaches and waterways throughout the eastern boundary at Cronulla.  There is a lot of green space throughout the ‘Shire’ and many people take pride in their gardens. Christmas is a treat with the ‘competitions’ in some areas for the best displays – Bonnet Bay is well known for that! There are train-lines throughout the shire and a regular connecting bus service as well.  Our Federal and State Local Members are Liberal - and the Sutherland Shire Council has had criticsim recently for being 'Liberal' as well.  Dipped out there, 'Ay!

Exercise 8: filter bubbles? CURRENT AWARENESS

I tried to watch both, here with background construction noises and can’t have my volume up too load as it distracts other learners.  That said;

Robots delivering books – some automated book delivery system.  That was great: I added it to my Consolidate and maintain industry knowledge assignment!  But it was basically how you order books, these are selected from the ‘electronic library’ and how things will/may be done in the future. Remember, when robots take over – its all ‘humbug’.  Seriously: yes these are good to see – watched a BBC doco on in at and they will not become widespread use as they take up space and are cost prohibitive – so there will still be work for us ‘manual librarians’.
The TED talks: internet filters?  Well I don’t like the technology, so I struggled to take in what the Gen Y person was going on about. Still no idea what/who TED is.  But the content of this talk was about ‘bubble’ filters derived from some algorithm that will allow what it thinks you want to see/watch via the internet.  Seems like targeted ‘big brother’ quasi Internet use and isn’t that why China bans it?  If we can’t see the whole scope of internet content because vested capitalist interest will not allow us all access as it may slant their advertising – why be on the net/web in the first place.  It is not always the best search tool: my be quicker than a reference book – but not always as accurate.  Yeah I’m a stickler for traditional methods – they work

There was: Dr henry Feldman, assistant professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School Talking Technology 2013. Talks about Dr’s using the ipad in healthcare. Released 31 May, 2013.  I could not open any further – would download to itunes  and then ‘we’ have technology issues….. Its not pretty from there on in!  

Will this technology ever be so easy for people to use: they won't print 'technology' for dummies anymore?

Investigative Exercise #5: facebook?

Well....

I tried to enter both subjects into the National Library facebook page - no joy!  techno illiterate still?

The purpose of a library is to keep and have accessible to the public collected works, usually reference books, magazines, and periodicals.  Then - they can loan other works such as topic specific books and these can be read in the library, copied [in accordance with the Copyright Act], or taken away.  BUT - for the patrons of a library - QUITE is to be observed.  The patrons can also access a computer and copy material from on-line inquiries on the subject matter.

Now - being anti 'technology' was not my main 'gripe':

Libraries are for study purposes, on some occassions - entertaining but EDUCATING children! 

If someone wants to be 'social' - go for a coffee somewhere and leave the library for people who want to be there - studying!  If you want to chat, on the phone especially - GO OUTSIDE!  Yeap, I want to do Library studies and major in: Shhhh.... and filthy looks at smarty kids/youths/Gen Y [had to mention that lot, didn't I?] people who just want to 'hang' and do facebook....

It was bad enough during the recent TAFE/School holidays trying to research my TAFE work and no parking was to behad at the Sutherland Library as all the HSC 'kids' were 'studying' there.  No it was a group hang out as there are no security to hassle them as there are in the Mall.....  Those of us who wanted to study were unable to get to some computers - these were being used for facebook, etc...  And You Tube videos.

Leave the Social Media out of the library as it distracts readers, is a draw card for younger people who can't/don't appreciate 'library etiquate' and those who need to go there and study - can get on with their business.

These 'kids' who use facebook come in and drank  coffee anyway - go to the internet cafe and do it there. 

Yes older members of the community do use the library for computer access - they can't afford a computer and internet access - they are usually there during the day when they can get there [and are not asleep?] - so the evenings can be for professional people or 'mature age students' to access computers for research and  assignments - turning their phones OFF so as not to disturb other library users.

Guess I'm just ne of those 'cranky old farts' that goes to libraries.  Its bad enough that at TAFE some parents bring their kids who play games, make noise and cause some rukus... Do we really need to encourage 'social media' users into this domain?  NO!  Stay at home and facebook all you want there.

So we can use this to contact friends and 'influence' people?  I wrote an email following a rally I went to on Tuesday - frommy email list.  I willcontact others via Facebook as I don't have them on email my list.  WE need as a community to tell our politicians we want a safer society - and the butt stops with them!  Newcastle and Manly had trials - which work!  Have 1.00am lock out and alcohol restrictions - that is the underlying cause of the violence that has seen many people 'bashed' and left for either dead or in a seriously bad way.  As a society we are picking up the cost for the medical bills not only to transport [by Ambulance: road, helicopter and plane] to hospitals [for lengthy stays and seen by many professionals - surgeaons, brain specialists, speach pathologists, rehad specialists and consellors for their family and friends.  It all costs US.  And the prats who do it get off with reduced sentences - now it will be even less time in gaol [guess the pollies want that as gaols are getting too crowded?] and they will be out to do it again - to someone elses loved one: you, your child, etc.

You have a voice - make it heard.  Yes TAFE isn't the place to do it: Facebook and email perhaps - I'm just pricking your social consciousness about the matter.  So take care, Merry Christmas but be aware that with more people drinking this time of year - the 'risk' will go up!  Added 21 11 2013 :-)

I did try and save as a picture to be imported here: nice view of books on shelves - like the collection of Trinity College, Dublin.  This did not happen - not very amusing and becoming very frustrating....

Investigative exercise # 2

Well...

I rad over some of the three choices: Ultimo TAFE/Sydney Institute; John Oxley Library - State of QLD and Black Librarian.

Hmmmm - what were they all about - who knows and who'd want what/

Reading the S.I. Library for Ultimo TAFE tells me what is on, what was held and that was useful.  The staff/students were doing each month and how you the viewer could engage with this: what event is on, when and where.  Whjat is is about and how it helps - recycling clothes looks like a good idea.  There are posters about this around the TAFE which I have seen, but for those 'digitally inclinded' they can read these posts and see it there.

The Oxley Library was in Queensland - so not at all relevant to us here in Sydney!

Who is this Black Librarian?  She/He is in the US and it too would have little relevance to us in Sydney, Australia...

Investigative Exercise #1 answered?

The term Library 2.0 relates to the use of social media and inetrnet for provison of library services in the current age.  We can look at various services and feedback from social media sites that our: Local/Community / TAFE / University or other libraries now have.

These social media formats include: Twitter and Facebook.  ALso for a digital information age - the library may use the internet with: SAGE and Oxford Reference through the State Library system, or TROVE throught the National Library.

Hope that answers this first questions.

* Looking at some of the student presentations thus far: we have a lot of new technology coming into this service 'industry'.  We had a Library at Texas that HAS NO BOOKS - its all eBooks!  That will put the silverfish into a cundundrum!  Where will the dust go now?  They may have their place, but a good book will be hard to beat!  I love history and as much as we think we are more adanced - we may not be as far progressed as we think.  As for Library 2.0 - we will need 'back up' hard copies - so where will they go?  Onto any of these vacany shelves or will we file them electronically as that saves paper?  What a dilema to be in - glad I'll stick to books, as for the rest of Libary 2.0 - we still have some presentations to watch yet.  Added 21 11 2013  :-)
